Whether you are a longtime pet owner or are new to pet ownership, there are many ways you can improve your pet’s wellbeing and strengthen your special bond. This month Cloquet Animal Hospital is celebrating Responsible Pet Owner Month by sharing some helpful tips for caring for your pet.

Here are a few ways you can become a better pet owner.

Pet Safety

Keeping your pet safe should always be a top priority. The first step in improving your pet’s safety is to pet-proof your home. This includes storing medications and cleaning supplies out of your pet’s reach. You should also inspect your home and yard for plants that could be toxic to your pet. If you are unsure which plants could pose a risk to your pet’s health, consider checking out the ASPCA’s Poisonous Plant Database. This is an excellent resource for identifying plants around your home and determining which ones are dangerous to your pet.

Another essential safety measure is to make sure your pet has some form of identification. This could be as simple as a pet ID tag on their collar. Their ID tag should have your contact information in case your pet is separated from you. Microchips are also highly recommended and can increase the chance of being reunited with a lost pet. Microchipping is a simple procedure that can be done during your pet’s vaccination or wellness appointment. If you would like to schedule an appointment, please give us a call!

Spending Quality Time with Your Furry Friend

Having a pet is a serious commitment. Not only do pets require basic needs such as food and shelter, but they also have emotional needs. Before bringing home a pet, make sure you are prepared to give them the time and attention they deserve.

Spending quality time with your pet can be as simple as taking them for a daily walk or setting aside time to play with their favorite toy. Not only is this essential for your pet’s wellbeing, but it can also help strengthen your bond.

Understanding Your Pet’s Health Needs

Understanding your pet’s medical needs is critical for helping them live a long and happy life. Start by scheduling your pet’s annual wellness exam. Our team will perform a thorough physical exam and review your pet’s medical history during this appointment. Routine wellness visits are essential for detecting early signs of disease and getting your pet the care they need.

In addition to routine wellness appointments, it’s also important to stay on top of your pet’s preventative care. This includes keeping your pet’s vaccines up to date, providing parasite prevention, and maintaining your pet’s dental health. If you have questions about your pet’s preventative needs, we are happy to provide answers and help you keep your pet’s health on track.
